The United States faces a national security emergency due to extreme vulnerabilities in the electoral process. There are serious concerns regarding electronic voting machines, foreign interference from adversaries like China, and inaccurate voter rolls that include non-citizens. The Blueprint for Election Integrity suggests that public distrust in these systems could lead to social unrest or political violence if left unaddressed. To restore election integrity, the Blueprint proposes a series of comprehensive reforms, including mandatory voter ID, the elimination of most mail-in ballots, and returning to a single day of in-person voting. Furthermore, the Blueprint advocates for the President to declare an emergency to implement a paper-based, transparent system managed by a bipartisan commission before the 2026 elections. Ultimately, only verifiable and manual counting methods can guarantee a legitimate outcome and heal national divisions.
Countering Threats to Free and Fair Elections
Maladministration of elections, threats of foreign interference, and the persistence of vulnerable and insecure election practices and procedures, has driven public distrust in elections and the legitimacy of our elected representatives to record highs. Without significant reform, public distrust will increase, and experience in foreign elections suggests this will inevitably lead to social unrest and increasing political violence, and end, perhaps, in tyranny or revolution.
